The Black Cow
About This Spot
Stepping into The Black Cow feels a bit like settling into a well-loved corner of Montrose where the pace slows just enough to savor the moment. This classic American spot carries a warm, approachable vibe that blends the charm of a neighborhood café with the hearty comfort of a breakfast diner. Mornings here unfold with the inviting scent of fresh coffee and the murmur of familiar conversations, while afternoons bring a calm buzz as locals linger over ice cream or a carefully prepared lunch.
The rhythm at The Black Cow is easygoing but never sleepy—there’s a gentle liveliness that comes from thoughtful service and an honest menu, designed to feel like a familiar friend rather than a fleeting trend. Watching the skillets come out sizzling, or the steady pour of cappuccinos crowned with sweet foam, you get the sense that this is a place where food is made with care and a nod to tradition.
The welcoming nature of the space mirrors the kindness in the service. It’s the kind of spot where servers remember your preferences, or make a quiet gesture that feels like a small kindness. The menu reflects a love of hearty, comforting flavors—dishes that are familiar yet with a twist, whether it’s the playfully crusted French toast or a skillet layered with fresh veggies and smoky bacon. There’s a thoughtful balance here between the inventive and the classic, with touches like homemade jams and well-crafted mimosas that make lingering over breakfast all the more appealing.
Whether it’s a weekend morning rush or a laid-back afternoon break, The Black Cow invites you to slow down, enjoy the simple pleasure of good food made from scratch, and soak up a comforting atmosphere that feels both genuine and enduring. It’s a reliable kind of place, where the joy comes from the subtle pleasures of well-executed dishes and the human moments shared across the table.

Service was fantastic. He even pulled the chair out for my wife to sit. Very attentive and checked on us often. Food was also excellent. The chicken salad was enormous and the breaded chicken was light and crunchy.

Great tasty food maybe 4.5/5. We had the corned beef skillet, chicken sausage omelette, and the beef skirt salad. The portion for the beef skirt salad since it was pretty small for the price but it was really tasty.

As you may have guessed by looking at all the previous reviews, this place scores well. Just like their food, which basically makes this place - along with the service and the vibes, it’s pretty damn awesome. My Kobe Cheeseburger was beyond full of flavor and the Skirt Steak Salad, undeniably intense and delicious. We came here before going to Descanso, and even though it was 90 minute drive from Corona on a Saturday night, the food and company was absolutely worth the trip. I can’t wait to go back and you should look forward to going as well.

Their southern breakfast skillet and iced coffee with sweet foam is immaculate! This place gets really busy on weekends but the lines usually move quickly. I took off a point because, while Black Cow is one of my absolute favorite breakfast spots, their lunch is just okay. Get there before 11 AM!

I love spending time in the Montrose area, and it just wouldn’t be the same without a stop at Black Cow for breakfast. I’ve been coming here for well over 10 years, and I can’t believe I never left a review sooner. The service is always consistently great, and while the food can vary a bit from visit to visit, their homemade jam (at least it used to be homemade!) has always been unforgettable. There’s always a wait—truly always—but it usually moves quickly. I’ve never seen this place anything but packed. This time, I ordered the corned beef hash and it was delicious. We also tried the skirt steak salad, which was also really good. Everyone at the table was happy with their food. Of course we’ll keep coming back—this place is part of the Montrose experience. Must try if you’re around! Especially to check out their ceiling fan, I love the decorations!I’m

I came for my birthday lunch and the food was perfection. My steak was perfectly cooked and our server was very friendly and efficient.

My SIL and I went yesterday for lunch, about noon. We got a 4-top table inside and both ordered the cheeseburgers, medium. My SIL also added crispy bacon. The burgers were messy but good, with a great char flavor. The patty wasn't super thin and broke apart easily which is what a great burger should do. The fries were nicely crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Service was excellent. Our server was friendly, attentive, and fast with drinks refills and extra napkins. Like I said, messy but good. The bill for the two of us was just under $49 and the meal was worth the price. Worlds above a fast food burger.
